Work Behind the Work
September 24 - November 14, 2021
Work Behind the Work gives us the unique experience of looking inside the artist’s creative process. Artists utilize these working methods as creative playgrounds to experiment, explore and expand their initial ideas and vision. Some artists pull from observation, some artists record thoughts and musings, and some collect ephemera. Work Behind the Work investigates the moments of the creative trajectory of an artist's practice; the catalysts, the point of departures, and the seeds for future works of art.
This special exhibition is curated by Justin Phillips, Aaron Thompson, and Jeremy Waak for the Demuth Museum.
John Heliker: Drawing on the New Deal, 1932-1948
July 31 - September 12, 2021
This special traveling exhibition focuses on John Heliker's (1909-2000) early drawings and explores the artist's career beginnings. Heliker developed a highly personal and expressive approach to drawing during the Works Progress Administration (WPA) years. His powerful figure drawings, cubist-inspired landscapes, and biomorphic abstractions in diverse media are featured in this exhibition that brings attention to a remarkable aspect of his art that remains obscure.
Drawing on the New Deal original exhibition was curated by David A. Lewis, Professor of Art History at Stephen F. Austin University, Nacogdoches, Texas, in 2010 and was loaned to the Demuth Foundation by the Heliker-LaHotan Foundation, Inc.

Demuth Invitational: Illustrations from the Stories that Inspire
January 30 - March 6, 2021
Themes for the annual Invitational are selected based on concepts from Charles Demuth’s work, and 2021’s exhibition focuses on his literary illustrations -- imaginative watercolors and drawings inspired by contemporary novels and short stories from the early 20th century -- in celebration of the recent acquisition of A Prince of Court Painters (No. 1) to the museum's permanent collection. 33 local artists have created works inspired by a fictional character or scene from a story of their choice. The character or scene can be from contemporary culture, or a classic work.
