Choose the Experience

Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm for art by wishing to donate your time and talents with The Demuth Foundation Volunteer Team! Our volunteer team is one of our most important museum resources! There are four varied volunteer experiences that are each a wonderful introduction to the fine art world in two downtown Lancaster museums.

Front Desk Volunteer Ambassadors

If you see yourself in a historic Lancaster building filled with impactful local and nationally recognized fine art, consider volunteering for a front desk position at The Lancaster Museum of Art or The Demuth Museum!

Front Desk Volunteer Ambassadors are the face of our museums to both our members and to the public. Candidates must feel at ease with public interactions and are required to gently greet and inform museum visitors of our exhibits, assist in gift shop sales, and prepare membership and promotional direct mailings. This position is perfect for someone who has consistent available weekly hours and is looking for an enriching community art museum experience.

Special Event Volunteer & Substitute Front Desk Volunteer Ambassador

Become involved with the Foundation’s Art Auction and other community centered affairs! Or join our Substitute Volunteer Team to cover Front Desk Ambassador shifts! Either position can be suited to your schedule. These exciting volunteer experiences are ideal for someone who may have availability one to three times during the calendar year or has a changing weekly schedule.

Demuth Garden Steward

Local and world travellers enjoy this living extension of The Demuth Museum which has been the source of inspiration for many of Charles Demuth’s floral watercolors. Stewards carefully  tend to this historical garden during the spring, summer and fall months for garden clean up, planting and weeding. Flexible supervised Garden Steward hours must be coordinated with the Development and Operations Assistant. Novice and experienced gardeners are encouraged to apply.

Demuth Museum Docents

We're looking for a team of dedicated volunteers to work with staff to make guided tours and in-depth learning experiences at the Demuth Museum available to the public! Beginning in spring 2025, we will offer guided tours to groups who reserve in advance and offer regular guided tours during high volume guest times. Docents will participate in a training session once a month and will be expected to provide at least 1 tour each month starting in March 2025. The minimum time commitment is 3 hours monthly. Our Demuth 101 course is a prerequisite for participation and docents must pass background checks.

If interested in serving as a Demuth Museum docent, contact Education & Outreach Coordinator Abby Saurbaugh at asaurbaugh@demuth.org or 717-299-9940 x103.
