Fresh Focus: Demuth Still Life Paintings

August 3 - October 20, 2024

Charles Demuth's exquisite still lifes demonstrate his mastery of watercolor. Beginning in the late 1910s through his death in 1935, Demuth painted flowers, fruits, and vegetables, subjects readily available to him at his Lancaster, Pennsylvania home and studio, to refine his techniques and experiment with abstraction and Precisionism.

Fresh Focus will celebrate the homecoming of a major new acquisition in 2023, Apples (Peaches & Plums, A Double-Sided Work). This small-scale special exhibition of Demuth still lifes watercolors will highlight the Lancaster County produce he so often depicted while correlating Demuth’s interest in the subject matter with his diagnosis and experience with Diabetes.

Demuth Invitational: Still Life

May 25 - July 21, 2024

Some of Charles Demuth’s most intriguing and beloved works are watercolors featuring vegetables and fruits that highlight the abundance of Lancaster County’s farms. In 2023, we received a major acquisition of a double-sided watercolor c. 1925 of apples with peaches and plums on verso. We invited local artists to reflect on this work and other produce still lifes by Demuth to inspire new work through their perspective and style.
